Each day, we promise our children: “You can make a difference.”
I’m writing you today because I wanted to tell you about a program which I believe is one of the most innovative ways of fulfilling that promise: Reach Out’s Youth Grantmakers program. This program does more than support local nonprofits and charities. It challenges our youth volunteers to become the next generation of social entrepreneurs by devising and overseeing their very own grant programs from start to finish. If you could see how well these high school students rise to this challenge, you’d be absolutely amazed.
As a member of Reach Out’s Youth Grantmakers program, I’ve witnessed this program at work and it has inspired me. I want to see this program continue to thrive, but unfortunately, that may be easier said than done. The money that is re-granted out by the Youth Grantmakers is fully funded by donations and contributions from community members like you and me. Last year, the Youth Grantmakers turned down over a dozen grant applications, as there were only enough funds to issue four grants. This year, we need to raise at least $15,000 in grant money in order to continue the program. With your support, our Youth Grantmakers can expand their involvement with community agencies and make an even bigger difference this year.
I truly believe that supporting these amazing teens in their work is one of the best ways you can make your charitable dollars go further. While your contribution at any level is appreciated at any time of year, the Youth Grantmakers are approaching a critical funding deadline on April 1, 2013. Each $500 that they receive represents another grant that our Youth Grantmakers can award, with the maximum award amount per grant ranging up to $2,500.
